Examinations

Theoretical Examination:

Before taking the check-ride to become a Certified Flight Instructor in Airplanes, you will first need to pass the FAA written exams for the FOI (Fundamentals of Instruction) and FIA (Flight Instructor Airplanes) at an FAA-approved testing center.

The applicant must demonstrate a level of knowledge appropriate to the privileges of the holder of a CFI(A) in accordance with the requirements under the FARs. The applicant has to demonstrate the theoretical knowledge at an FAA-approved testing center in the form of 2 written tests. The applicant must pass the written exams with a minimum of 70% which is still a passing score.

Practical Examination

The practical skill exam is performed in flight with the authorized FAA examiner and can be taken after successful completion of the written tests at the FAA authority.

You will need to call your local Flight Standards District Office and tell them you would like to schedule the CFI Check-ride and they will provide you the DPE (Designated Pilot Examiner) to be tested with. Be ready to teach what is required by the PTS (Practical Test Standards).
