The Piper Arrow is a great choice for pilots in training who have little experience with complex aircraft. The design of the aircraft help pilots in easy transition from a training aircraft to a single with retractable landing gear and a controllable-pitch propeller. It is a simple retractable to fly, which makes it predominant. The retractable gear makes it more attractive and easier to fly, although with the same predictable handling as the line of singles in Cherokee where numerous pilots learned to fly. It is ideal for long cross-country flights as flying at 144Kn covers more ground in less time.

I flew with Flying Academy in Miami in July 2017 and in Corona, California in January 2018, flying for 65 hours in total. First off, Flying Academy is a very professional flight school with an undeniable family atmosphere: Lina María, Sandy and Natasha in Miami and Theary, Felicia and Matthew in Corona do a fantastic job at helping you out with every single issue or question you might have so far as the flight schedule itself but also the accommodation, transportation, paperwork for the validation of your foreign-based license, arranging the necessary meeting with the FAA agent and the list goes on. In both locations, I stayed at a school accommodation and rented one of their scooters. Their houses are modern and well-equipped and you share them with other pilots from the whole world.
This is literally an international experience and you are constantly immersed in aviation, there’s definitely a camaraderie spirit going on. I have made a lot of friends in the end.
Regarding the flying itself, the USA is a breathtaking environment. Landscapes range from paradise islands like the Keys, gorgeous beaches, or fantastic national parks like the Everglades in Florida to magnificent snowy mountains, large freshwater lakes, and arid deserts in California. I mostly flew on the Cessna 152, which turned out to be a most trusty steed, never let me down in all of the aforementioned climates. The USA has extensive ATC coverage and when flying VFR you can always ask for flight following, a service providing the pilot with traffic advisory, basic guidance and vectoring, and any information deemed necessary for a safe flight. The US controllers are friendly and understanding people even in a heavy workload, and you get cleared through Bravo airspace in no time. But of course, before flying solo, you must take a few hours of flight instruction to get used to the American procedures and communications.
The CFIs at Flying Academy are very kind and professional and make you feel confident with your new environment.
Mark, Luis, and Danny in Miami and Mark in Corona, hats off to you guys!
In Florida I flew to Orlando, admiring the immensity of the Everglades, one of the largest swamps on Earth and packed with alligators, to Marco Island and its sandy beaches and resorts on the southwest coast or even to Vero Beach on the east coast where I once had to stay the night due to severe thunderstorms in Miami. Florida is indeed a fantastic place to fly but you always have to watch out for convective weather and thunderstorms especially in summer, since they can build up quite rapidly.
I also flew right along the coastline from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and was cleared by ATC to transition at 600 ft above the sea just under the flight path of the airliners departing Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale.
This would be impossible and frowned upon back in good old Europe. What an incredible experience! Special mention goes to The Keys, a marvelous archipelago off the southern coast of Florida, with its crystal clear and shark-infested waters (yes you can spot them from the plane), which are a must-see when you are in Florida.
During one of my flights there, shortly after departing Key West International, I was vectored by the ATC and passed just a stone’s throw away from four F-16 fighters practicing maneuvers. Unbelievable! Welcome to America!
In California, the landscape radically changes from flat-and-level Florida and I understood the true meaning of mountain flying. There are a lot of mountain ranges there, with some summits rising up to over 14000 ft AMSL!
You can even see snow-covered pines and peaceful natural lakes at the top while just behind them lay vast stretches of arid desert. Breathtaking!
Among my many flights, I went to San Diego municipal airport, which is just a couple of meters from the Mexican border, or to Agua Caliente, a small airfield right in the middle of the desert surrounded by mountains.
After I landed there, I took some time to stretch my legs in the desert sand, listening to the sound…of silence. Never in my whole life had I experienced this: not a single sound whatsoever. No wind. No city noises. Nothing!
My ears felt totally weird not picking up any sound in such an empty vastness, it was surreal. Not to mention the magnificent lunar landscape between Los Angeles and Agua Caliente: it felt like being on another planet. Did my GPS just go completely nuts and get me a few light-years off my route? I wondered… Another day I flew to downtown Los Angeles at just 1000 ft AGL, landing at John Wayne Airport squeezing between two Boeing 737 and then over beautiful Newport Beach down to Dana Point.
I went to Las Vegas as well: after hours of crossing mountains, empty deserts, dry lakes, and mountains again, there it was!
Sin City, materializing out of nowhere, like an oasis in the desert. I spent the night there, enjoying all the insanity only this city can offer. The day after was my big day, the pinnacle of my whole trip. I had planned a flight from Vegas to the Grand Canyon and then back to Los Angeles, with 3 intermediary stops for refueling. Three States to cross Nevada, Arizona, and California. Quite an adventure, especially when flying alone on a Cessna 152 in a forsaken and desert wilderness. Well, I had my ATC friends to help me out in case something went south but with the high terrain, they sometimes lost radar and radio contact with my aircraft.
This was the most intense and incredible flight of my life: you really learn to plan ahead, to make decisions and to stay focused for a long time because in the desert you’re basically on your own.
In conclusion, I strongly recommend flying in the USA to any pilot craving new adventures and challenges. Flying Academy is the perfect opportunity for this: I naively thought I would meet business people but instead I met friends. Furthermore, at Flying Academy Miami, nearly everybody speaks fluently English AND Spanish so if Spanish is your native language: fear not, you’re in good hands! Y créanme, son súper chéveres de verdad!
One massive thanks to you all guys: Lina María, Theary, Sandy, Felicia, Natasha, Mark R., Mark S., Luis, Matthew, Danny and staff, you helped me fly harder, better, faster, stronger.
I hope we’ll meet again soon cruising over the Atlantic at some 35000 ft. I’ll key my mic for you anytime.
The best solution for me was to fly abroad so I started looking for some options. I found the possibility of flying in the USA. Why the United States? Because there is an enormous number of general aviation pilots and very busy airspaces. Heavy air traffic meant frequent communication, and that was the training I was looking for.
And what about location? Well, first I had to find a flight school which would be suitable for me at an interesting location in the US. I found out that Flying Academy just opened a new training facility in Southern California. This was the exact location I was looking for.
My adventure started on the 17th of November when I landed in LAX where I was picked up by the awesome Theary, an employee of Flying Academy at Corona Municipal Airport. Corona airport was my base airfield located 40nm (74km) south-east of Los Angeles. When I arrived, I met the other employees Felicia and Jerome (the Flying Academy manager) which were awesome as well.
These three people were very helpful during my stay and took care of all the documentation and legislation.
The house where I was living during my stay was 7 minutes from the airport by scooter. Training started one day after I acquired FAA PPL license. First was the ground lesson which was mainly about the classification of airspaces and then check-ride with flight instructor Mark. Then the real training was about to start.
I have to say, California offered me spectacular views. Everything was new and undiscovered for me. The big mountains, lakes, long highways, huge cities, eternal deserts, ocean, islands and a lot of airports.
The area around has been very beautiful and rich. But the most important part was the training itself, not only views, you just have to know how to combine it ☺.
Before I was able to explore the area by myself, I had to be sure that there is no problem with communication, orientation, and rules.
For the whole first week, I flew with safety pilot Mark, who was teaching me how to do things correctly. When you fly for the first time in California airspace, trust me, it will be a little bit shocking to adapt to their English. They spoke fast, used a lot of abbreviations, and phrases I have never heard of. Maybe it was more difficult for me because I started time building in the USA with almost zero experience with aviation English.
If you put a lot of effort into your training, you improve day by day, it is not such a difficult obstacle at the end.
So after approximately 5 flights, where I was mostly adapting, learning, and discovering, I became confident and started to fly on my own.
Getting into more details, I summarize what my every day looked like. The day before, I created the flight plan for the flight. In the morning I checked NOTAMS, TFRs, finished the weight and balance document, and got the weather briefing. Then I took the scooter and rode to the Corona airport.
I was probably the only one with a scooter in Corona, so sometimes it was funny to drive around big trucks with a small motorbike, but the scooter was awesome and also very cheap.
My most useful tool for flying was the Foreflight application and GPS localizer, which made my flight and preparation much safer, flexible and precise. Every flight, I also communicated with air traffic controllers on frequencies like the Socal approach or March approach where I could ask for flight following. So basically they were taking care of the safety of my flight. For example, they warned me about the traffic nearby (in the air ☺), they constantly provided me the altimeter setting, gave me permission to fly through certain airspace, and sometimes they gave heading to avoid other traffic. The aircraft I used mostly was Cessna 152. For longer flights Cessna 172.
Cessna 152 was also a very good option for time building because of the price which was 95 dollars per hour.
I wanted to explore in all directions from the Corona airport so I started with going south to the uncontrolled airport of Oceanside, which offered a fantastic view on the coast during departure. Another day I switched the direction to the east, where my favorite airport was, Palm Springs. Even more to the south-east, there was a small airfield, Salton Sea, where I first experienced landing in the desert. It wasn´t the only cross-country flight I had on the schedule. Some days I practiced on control airfields around Corona like Chino, Riverside, Brown, and Bracket just to improve the communication with a tower.
When I switched more to the northeast I visited another interesting airport in Big Bear City. It is an airport with an elevation of 6,752 feet above MSL and it is located in the middle of mountains reaching up to 11,000 feet. It took 45 minutes to get there from Corona so the flight was entirely climbing.
Then I switched to the west side where Los Angeles is located. The area is one big Class Bravo airspace and there is a lot of large airplanes flying around.
Every time after departure, before Bravo airspace west from Corona, I had to reach a higher altitude and get very close to the airspace border. It was because of the mountains near Corona which were interrupting the VHF signal from my radio to the tower. So the communication had to be very fast or I had to just circle before entering the airspace, another difficulty was to even be able to speak to Socal Approach because the frequency was very busy especially around LAX Bravo airspace.
My first flight westbound was to Catalina Island, which was absolutely fantastic. When I left the west coast I flew over the ocean and reach the Island which had an airport in the middle located on the peak at 1,602 feet MSL.
Before I flew to America, I watched a lot of videos about how pilots are landing at this airport and I was very curious about this one. I was absolutely amazed when I was there for real.
Believe me, when you are turning to the right base runway 22 and see the edge of the island ahead of you and the airport on the hill on the right side. it was just a hell of a fantastic view. These were the moments that just took my time building to a totally different level than I ever expected. This is exactly what California offers to every time builder. Awesome experience with stunning views. As I said the western part is very busy airspace and you have a chance to see Boeing or Airbus approaching John Wayne, or LAX. Most of the time the air traffic controllers gave me directions which I had to follow. The inland westbound airfields I visited were Long Beach, Santa Monica, and Santa Paula. Santa Paula had a very challenging traffic pattern near the mountain ridge and on my way back I flew along the west coast where I had a chance to see the beginning of California State road 1.
My longest cross-country flight was also achieved in the USA. It was a flight to Grand Canyon International Park Airport from Corona and back.
That flight was just awesome. I also had safety pilot Steve for this flight, because I have no experience of flying across a long desert. The flight took me approximately 8 hours in total and two states to overfly (California and Arizona). On this flight, we experienced big changes in local pressure, so we had to change altitude very often to remain at our cruising altitude, we experienced wind shears and also a very strong headwind during landing at our destination. From the airport, we flew over Grand Canyon National Park and enjoyed a lot of beautiful views.
In the USA, it is also a chance to see a lot of beautiful aircraft. For example the first day during my check ride at Flabob airfield, I saw a beautiful DC-3 Dacota. Sometimes I was flying traffic patterns with Stearman in front of me, and it was funny to hear the pilot communicating in an open cockpit.
During my cross-country flight, I saw DC-17 Globemaster taking off from the military airfield, and I was just amazed at how steeply this beast climbed.
At Palm Springs I landed once parallel with an Airbus (but don’t know which one, definitely not A380). I am not 100% sure but maybe I saw B-2 Spirit during my taxing at Corona. It was the first idea that came up to my mind when I saw a big wing overflying the airport, but maybe I was wrong and it was something different.
If I speak just about an experience the flying in the USA gave me, it is mostly in communication and adaptation. As a pilot, all of us are facing or will face the situations where you have to be fast in the decision and adaptation. In California, there is a lot of general aviation airplanes and you are new around them, unfamiliar with the area, so for example around uncontrolled airfields, it can become very challenging. Imagine the small Corona airport with 4 aircraft and 1 helicopter flying traffic pattern and you are the sixth approaching from the cross-country flight. But it is a part of the training so it has its purpose. Then there are control airfields. It was a little bit different style of communication with ATC. I felt more comfortable but still have to comply with everything the controller says. He (she) controls an airfield where they are landing Boeings, Airbuses, and general aviation aircraft simultaneously.
For example, the ATC is separating small aircraft on the traffic patterns and also has a jet on the final.
When I was on short final at Chino, ATC gave me an instruction to change 26L to 26R because suddenly I had a jet aircraft behind me approaching the same runway.
So even if it looks quiet, it can become very busy in a few seconds. I also experienced a lot of situations when it was necessary to communicate very quickly and change the frequency 5 times in a very short time. For example, when I was approaching Brown airfield near Mexican borders and then after takeoff, I requested to fly through Bravo airspace along with the coast over San Diego.
Regarding the weather, I was there during October and November. Almost every day had very good VFR conditions, however, in Autumn there were days with clouds and morning haze so it is not CAVOC every day.
I canceled my flight due to weather only twice during the month.
Once because of the wind, once because of visibility. Other days were absolutely ok to fly according to VFR rules.
I recommend time building in California for every pilot who wants to see fantastic views, improve their communication and for those who just love aviation and are all about it.
I was there for a month and made approximately 60 flight hours as PIC. California has many options for pilots. I haven’t seen everything and I plan to fly there again. For example, my plan for the next USA is to overfly States from west to east, or another side.
[:en]It’s been my passion since I was a child. It just kept on growing until the day I was sure that yes this is the only thing that I would like to do, and here I am. At Flying Academy right now!
I started flying with the flight simulator at the beginning, my first fly as an aerobatic experience was something that I would never forget, you are used to straight and level flight, but this one is just inverted. You literally, do everything that is against the law, you are not allowed to spin on a normal aircraft and I am doing spins legally.
Europe is a massive area, but the Czech Republic (Prague) (Brno) is in the middle of it, so you can basically travel internationally as a pilot in command which is something different as a pilot’s perspective and actually when you are an amateur too, it’s been like an amazing experience for me to fly to Germany, and I have been planning myself to go to Austria too, the access is much easier than other countries.
Stop thinking and come over, you need to come over and see how things are going in this academy, it’s different and it’s much more interesting. See you here.

Become a pilot in an airline company… A pilot! Oh My God. That was my dream since I was a kid.
My name is Hyunsum Sim, I’m from South Korea, I was living in Seoul. The capital city of Korea.
And right now I’m doing the FAA PPL course in the Flying Academy Miami.
At some point in my life, I felt like, I was, you know, in a slump, so I asked myself if I am happy with what I’m doing now? why I’m doing this job? Is this, the job I want to do for the next 20 or 30 years in my life? My answer was NO! Then why should I do it? What do I want to do now? I want to do something professional and then I found out that pilots are so professional, it was not only my dream but also it was a well-paid job and the uniform looks great.
Why I chose Flying Academy Miami?
The first reason was: The FAA license can be easily converted anywhere, so that’s a really good advantage. Second reason was the weather: The weather in Miami, it’s really perfect, when I first arrived here many people said, you know, Miami is the perfect place to fly and It didn’t take that much time to understand what they say it, here, the sky is so blue and sunny, the view from the sky is perfect. And the third reason was: When I was looking for the proper flight school in South Korea (and I contacted many schools, really many schools) but only Flying Academy gave me the fastest response with complete information. So I say okay, I can see that I can trust this school. Get in touch with Flying Academy.
To be honest, it is just quite different from my dream, the comfort airliner plane is quite small. That’s only for two people and it is very sensitive when the wind pushes our airplane it moves it like from right to left and up and down. Oh my God, it’s quite different from what I thought but every time that I start to control the airplane, I get more excited, Oh my God, it’s really exciting, I want to do it more and more and don’t to be afraid. Always the first step is the most difficult thing but as soon as you take the first step, you will keep going through all of your courses, so don’t be afraid, just do it, I promise it is a rewarding career.
Do it now or never!

¡Hazlo ahora o nunca![:]
I was almost crying when I was taking off for the first time when I was doing my solo, hey Jose come on you can not cry here at this moment, that was good, I like to tell that story.
Hello Everyone, My name is Jose Vaca, I’m from Colombia I’m 26 years old, I’m doing my from FAA 0 to CPL, my private pilot course, at Flying Academy Miami.
Since I was a kid I was always dreaming to travel all around the world, and I think it is not a better way to do it, that being in the cockpit when you are in the aircraft.
Some people are dreaming just to go to the airlines, but my real dream is going to the airspace, so I know that I have to be in the airlines from 5 to 10 years, and then I can apply to the NASA, so, sky is not the limit but it is the beginning for me.
What I think makes a pilot the best pilot, is that the pilot is always learning, when you feel that you already have learned everything you find another thing and another thing.
I always like to say that anyone can learn how to fly, but, only the people that has nerves of steel, is able to go to the airlines, because we are constantly training for emergencies like if we have radios broken, or if an engine pump fails, or in the worse case scenario, that the engine lost, you have to fly the plane safely, you can drive your car and it is still in the ground, but if you lost the engine in the air, you are the only one that can save your own life, so the best pilot is the one that is always learning how to succeed when something happens on the air.
What I like the most about Flying Academy, is that they know what they are doing, you just feel like you are in the airlines, they set goals for professionalism, they have high standards of maintenance, so whenever you are going to fly you know that the airplane is in airworthy conditions, people in front desks, administrative people, oh, what I like the most is, instructors, are the best, yeah they are friendly with you, they know what are they talking about, they are amazing instructors here, and the student community here is all over the world. Normally on the weekends here in Miami, I come to school, yeah, for real you have to study a lot.
The best advice that I can give to someone that is thinking to become a pilot, first of all, speak english, like I know some friends of mine that had came to the school, but they dont really speak good english, so they spent more of the time trying to translate things, and no concentrating in what the lection is about, the second thing is go flying before coming here, like, you have to experience for yourself, if you like how it feels, when you are doing some maneuvers, I have some friends, that have trown up, because you are experiencing some G’s in your stomach, in your body and as I said before it is not something for everyone, you have to have nerves of steel, you have to really like it, to know, that you wanna be a pilot, it is not fancy that, hey I have the uniform, I look nice, I know that everyone is going to love me, but if you dont like to plan your flight plan, if you dont like to speak to ATC, if you dont like to follow procedures, if you dont like to memorize, what are you going to do when you have an emergency? don’t do it!
Once again you have to study a lot in aviation, it is not something fancy, you have to study a lot, in fact, it is hard work and dedication what gives you wings.

[:en]My name is Norbert Santana, I’m from the Dominican Republic, and I’m currently taking the instrument rating course here at Flying Academy L.A.
“I took a trip from the Dominican Republic to Texas when I was back 6 years old for the first time coming to the US, and the pilot of the company that I flew with, he gave me his wings and as a little kid, I thought it was the coolest thing on the world, later on, I got to see what the inside of a cockpit looks like, and that’s why kind of make me wanna get into aviation”. Get in touch with Flying Academy.
“There is a lot of schools that unfortunately not paid attention to the students and what their needs are, and, you know you go in the class and it is almost as they see you as a tuition, they don’t see you as a real person, trying to learn and gain experience, they are moving you all around in your schedule and stuff like that. Here at Flying Academy, every time that I need to take a flight is there, I just need to go in, there is no problem, and they really make me feel like, these people are trying to help me evolve my pilot career and that’s number one for me”.
What would you say to a student that just joined Flying Academy?
“I will say you made de right choice, it is absolutely the funniest thing that you can do, with your clothes on! it’s definitely great, it takes a lot of hard work, but, what doesn’t? And I recommend you just calm down, just take a flight, just one flight and see what it is like, and you will know if it is for you or not, and the most people, you know, they really go crazy, so that’s all I can say, just come and try out”.
Flying Academy creates a multicultural learning environment with students from all over the world. This is an opportunity for everyone to be surrounded by students from different cultures and gain a broader understanding that can better prepare them for their future career. Our school offers a lot of opportunities and gives the required support to fulfill their dreams of becoming professional and successful pilots.

[:en]We just had the opportunity to interview one of our former students, Gustavo Angeles from Mexico who nowadays is a First Officer at Interjet, he shared with us how was his experience in our course from Zero hours to Commercial. https://flyingacademy.com/pilot-training/ab-initio-faa/faa-0-cpl/
Q. Before arriving at Flying Academy, what were my concerns and fears?
Gustavo: After talking it with my family and once it became a fact that I was going to study in a school in the United States, my main fears naturally were, the language and the fact that I did not know anyone in the city. As expected, when I arrived for the first time I felt melancholy and a little scared, because in the end, I was in a foreign country, away from my family and friends, and without knowing for sure what it was waiting for me. Despite feeling enthusiastic about the fact that I was going to learn to fly, it was impossible for me not to feel uncertainty, mixed feelings and why not, a little panic.
Q. What were your expectations about Flying Academy, and were those exceeded or not?
Gustavo: To tell the truth, my first expectations were very simple; learn to fly, get my commercial license and return to Mexico to find work. However, what I had to live was incredibly special, because not only did I achieve what I expected, but it also brought me a collection of memories and adventures that will always live inside me. Flying Academy was not only an aviation school for me, but it was also a life camp. Thanks to its international program, I was able to meet people from literally around the world. People who shared a taste for aviation and who came just like me, without knowing anyone and wanting to live a new experience. For the same reason, it did not take more than three days to find a new family in a foreign country. So yes, my expectations were exceeded and by far.
Q. How was your process in Flying Academy, did you like it, was it easy?
Gustavo: My passing through Flying Academy was a life adventure. Everything that I had to live helped me to break schemes and to improve myself as I had never done before. From overcoming the traditional language barrier to being independent in every way, from learning to land an airplane to do a solo cross – country. From something so scary as to how to do a check ride with an FAA examiner to something as rewarding as having a beer and eating a good burger after a long day of study. Flying Academy was a place that opened the doors to a new world and with the help of each one of its instructors and staff members, they helped me to be a better pilot. Did I like? I loved it.It was easy? Definitely not. It was not easy, but it was worth one hundred percent. And in fact, it was because it was not easy, that I learned everything I learned. Nothing worthwhile comes easily.
Q. What did you like most about Flying Academy?
Gustavo: There were several things that I take from my stay at Flying Academy. First of all, the fact that I learned to do something I love; FLY. Second, the opportunities that the school gave me to make my schedule in my own way and how much they helped me to achieve my goals. Thanks to the flexibility they offered me, I was able to finish the program from zero to commercial with multi-engine in 10 months. Third, the friendships I did. I can say without the slightest fear of being wrong, that while I was in Miami, I never felt lonely, sad or eager to return to my home. Quite the opposite. I lived the experience as best as I could and managed to return to Mexico with my head held high and proud of my achievements.
Q. How was the process of validation in Mexico?
Gustavo: Tedious. However, that is just a bad thing that afflicts the institutions of my country and is the same for everyone. In Mexico, you can take longer to validate than you take to finish the training. However, I would not change my experience at Flying Academy for anything in the world, so if I had to choose again, I would choose to study a thousand times in the United States.
Q. How was the transition to an airline?
Gustavo: Maybe the most challenging thing I’ve done in my life. No doubt flying a commercial airplane on an airline like Interjet is challenging but simply rewarding. The admission process was long (it took around 5 months) but it was worth every minute of waiting. I had the opportunity to take the training of the Sukhoi Superjet 100, a Russian production plane that is simply beautiful. I am currently flying that plane and I could not be more grateful to have the opportunity to fly it. My father has always told me that “an airplane is an airplane and flying is flying. An aviator makes his path flying, and the more planes he or she fly, the better he/she become” For this reason, I am very grateful for the blessing of having a job, the most beautiful work, and being able to enjoy it flight by flight.
Q. Would you recommend Flying Academy as the first option?
Gustavo: Definitely yes! As I mentioned earlier, Flying Academy helped me develop the skills I needed to achieve my entry into the world of work. The medium of aviation is fantastic because it is fun and challenging at the same time. Each flight is different, regardless of whether you have done it before. You have to study a lot, but it’s worth it when you get to sit in a jet cabin more than thirty thousand feet high. In my opinion, Flying Academy has all the means to help future pilots develop fully in this aviation world. Both for the quality of its instructors, its facilities, the airport in which they are located (KTMB), the internationality of their students, the warmth of their staff and above all, the confidence they make you feel when you fly.

Gustavo: A decir verdad, mis primeras expectativas eran muy simples; aprender a volar, sacar mi licencia comercial y regresar a México a buscar trabajo.
¿Me gustó?
