First class medical certificate

A first class medical certificate is required for all pilots involved in commercial aviation. This certificate has the most restrictive medical standards. The holder of a medical certificate must be mentally and physically fit to safely exercise the privileges of the applicable license.
If you are not a holder of the first class medical certificate, we will be glad to help you arrange your examination in an authorized Aeromedical Centre.

Aeromedical examination

Initial examinations for a first class medical certificate shall be carried out at an AMC (Aeromedical Centre). The revalidation and renewal examinations may be delegated to an AMC or an AME (Aeromedical Examiner).
Aeromedical Centres (AME) authorized to issue first class medical certificates in the Czech Republic are “ULZ” in Prague.

Acceptance of medical certificate

Certificate issued by any EASA member state is accepted without formality by other EASA member state.

First class medical certificate requirements

The medical requirements for a PART-FCL pilot’s license are contained in PART-MED (Medical).
The Joint Aviation Requirements (PART-FCL) is a series of regulations covering all of aviation that have been implemented in the EASA European aviation safety agency.
Medical History – these are the questions about past illnesses declared on your application form. You will be asked about them by the examining doctor and if a history exists, it is recommended to bring reports from your physician. Simple appendicitis or a broken arm are not regarded as major illnesses.
Eyesight – the examination form and the exact requirements are listed in PART-FCL Class 1 Visual Standards:

• Distance Vision – Your visual acuity (measured by your ability to see-in this case, lines of letters on a chart at 6 meters) must be at least 6/9 in each eye separately and 6/6 using both eyes together, with or without glasses or contact lenses (correction). If you need correction, the refractive error (the amount of correction) must not exceed +5.00 diopters of long sight or -6.00 diopters of short sight. This is in the most ametropic meridian (taking into account any astigmatism). Astigmatism must not exceed 2.00 diopters. The difference in correction between each eye (anisometropia) must not be more than 2.00 diopters. Your optometrist will be able to further explain these terms.
• Near Vision – On the standard near vision eye chart you must be able to read the N5 print between 30 and 50 cm and the N14 print at 100 cm, with or without correction.
  Contact Lenses – You may wear contact lenses as a professional pilot, but they must be monofocal, nontinted and for distant vision (not to correct near vision). Any contact lenses should be brought to the examination.
• Eye surgery – Applicants who have undergone eye surgery may be assessed as fit subject to satisfactory ophthalmic evaluation (see PART-MED.B.070 Visual System Subpart (f)).
• Color Vision – You will be tested for normal color vision with Ishihara Test Plates (a series of numbers or shapes outlined by different colored dots, easily seen by someone with normal color vision). If you fail these you will need to pass an approved lantern test (a series of colored lights that you must identify correctly) in order to gain a PART-FCL Class 1 certificate.
• Eye Function – You must have normal fields of vision. You must not suffer from double vision. Any degree of heterophoria (eye muscle imbalance) in excess of: 8Δ exo, 10Δ eso or 2Δ hyperphoria – measured at 6 m or 12Δ exo, 8Δ eso or 1Δ hyperphoria – measured at 33 cm will require further evaluation by an eye specialist. There must be no acute or chronic disease in either eye or surrounding structures.

If you are in any doubt you should take a copy of the standards to an optician who will be able to interpret them. This will allow you to have an initial eye test before going to an AMC.
Physical Examination – a general check that everything is functioning correctly. It will cover lungs, heart, blood pressure, stomach, limbs and nervous system.
Ears – The basic hearing test used throughout PART-MED is the ability to hear conversational speech when tested with each ear at a distance of 2 meters from and with your back turned towards the medical examiner (PART-MED.B.080 Otorhino-laryngology Subpart (b) and (c)). This test is done at every medical examination for both professional and private pilots.
For professional pilots, and private pilots with an instrument rating, a further test called an audiogram is required. The audiogram is a test where you signify that you have heard sounds at different frequencies. Perfect hearing is measured as nil loss of hearing (0 decibel – 0 dB) at that particular frequency. Decreased hearing is shown as a decibel loss (10, 20, 30, 40 decibels) at a particular frequency. The required hearing levels and the maximum allowable losses are listed below:

• Frequency – Allowable loss
  500 Hz – 35 dB
  1000 Hz – 35 dB
  2000 Hz – 35 dB
  3000 Hz – 50 dB

If you can hear a normal voice in each ear separately at 2 meters, you should not have a problem.
There may be some loss of hearing as a pilot’s career progresses (often due to noise induced hearing loss). If the audiogram figures reach a level 5 dB less than the renewal figures above, then an annual audiogram is required.
Electrocardiogram – (ECG) – this measures the electrical impulses passing through your heart. It can show disorders of the heart rhythm or of the conduction of the impulses. Sometimes it can show a lack of blood supplying the heart muscle. In the unlikely event of these changes showing on your ECG, further tests with a report from a cardiologist will have to be sought.
Lung Function Test (spirometry) – this tests your ability to breathe deeply and to expel air from your lungs.
Haemoglobin blood test – this is a finger prick blood test which measures the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Low hemoglobin is called anemia and will need further investigation.
Cholesterol blood test – the same finger prick as above. There is no disqualifying level, but the possible health risks of high cholesterol will be explained by the doctor at the time of your examination.
Chest X-ray – this investigation is not required for PART-FCL Class 1, but may be required when indicated on clinical or epidemiological grounds.
Urine test – mainly looking for sugar (diabetes), protein or blood.

For how long does EASA 1 Class medical is valid?

The Period of Validity of EASA medical certificate is determined by:

• Applicant’s age on the date of the examination.
  17-39 years – valid for 12 months
  40-59 years – valid for 6-12 months (dependent on type of flying undertaken)
  60 plus years – valid for 6 months
• The type of flying undertaken (only applicable if aged 40-59). For pilots aged between 40 and 59 on the date of their examination the validity varies according to the type of flying undertaken.
  Single pilot commercial air transport operations carrying passengers – valid 6 months
  Other commercial operations, ie multi-pilot, flying instructor – valid 1 year
• Whether the examination is a Revalidation or Renewal.
  a. Revalidation means an examination undertaken while you hold a current medical certificate. You can schedule a revalidation medical on the date of expiry or up to 45 days in advance of that date. The new expiry date is calculated by adding the relevant number of months of the new validity period to the expiry date on your current certificate.
  b. Renewal means you take a reexamination if you have let your certificate expire. The new expiry date is calculated by adding the relevant number of months of the new validity period to the date of examination. For an examination undertaken very early (more than 45 days before the current certificate is due to expire) the renewal rules apply.

Second class medical certificate

A second class medical certificate is required only for General Aviation pilots – those that fly as a hobby. Since the holder is not involved in commercial activities, the certificate is not as restrictive; still, the holder of the medical certificate must be mentally and physically fit to exercise safely the privileges of the applicable license.
If you are not a holder of the second class medical certificate, we will be glad to help you arrange your examination in an authorized Aeromedical Centre.
It is at the examiners discretion if the psychological test will be conducted for second class medical certificate. Still it is required only if there is serious suspicion of alcoholism, suicide attempt, depression or other similar factors.
Trainees applying for a flight fitness examination should approach their appointment with appropriate responsibility. In view of the complex nature of examination we recommend that the applicants observe a healthy lifestyle over the long-term and have only a light dinner the evening before their examination. They should also refrain from consuming alcohol, avoid social events and partying till the early morning hours prior to their appointment as the applicants should get enough sleep and rest when presenting themselves for their examination. The initial examination undertaken by military and civil professionals also includes a detail psychological assessment.

Certificado médico de primera clase.

Se requiere un certificado médico de primera clase para todos los pilotos que participan en la aviación comercial. Este certificado tiene los estándares médicos más restrictivos. El titular de un certificado médico debe ser mental y físicamente apto para ejercer de manera segura los privilegios de la licencia correspondiente. Si no es titular de un certificado médico de primera clase, con gusto lo ayudaremos a organizar su examen en un Centro Aeromédico autorizado. .

Los exámenes iniciales para un certificado médico de primera clase se llevarán a cabo en un AMC (Centro Aeromédico). Los exámenes de revalidación y renovación se pueden delegar a un AMC o un AME (examinador aeromédico).
Los Centros Aeromédicos (AME) autorizados para emitir certificados médicos de primera clase en la República Checa son “ULZ” en Praga.

Lentes de contacto: puede usar lentes de contacto como piloto profesional. pero deben ser monofocales, no impresos y para visión lejana (no para corregir la visión de cerca). Cualquier lente de contacto debe ser llevada al examen.
• Cirugía ocular: Los solicitantes que se han sometido a una cirugía ocular pueden ser evaluados como aptos para una evaluación oftalmológica satisfactoria (ver PARTE-MED.B.070 Subparte de sistema visual (f)).
• Visión de color: Se le realizará una prueba de visión de color normal con las placas de prueba de Ishihara (una serie de números o formas delineadas por puntos de diferentes colores, que puede ver fácilmente alguien con visión de color normal). Si no los aprueba, deberá pasar una prueba de linterna aprobada (una serie de luces de colores que debe identificar correctamente) para obtener un certificado PART-FCL Class 1.

No debe haber enfermedades agudas ni crónicas en los ojos ni en las estructuras circundantes.

Si tiene alguna duda, debe llevar una copia de los estándares a un óptico que podrá interpretarlos. Esto le permitirá tener una prueba ocular inicial antes de ir a un AMC.
Examen físico: U n control general de que todo funciona correctamente. Cubrirá los pulmones, el corazón, la presión arterial, el estómago, las extremidades y el sistema nervioso.
Orejas: La prueba de audición básica que se usa en PART-MED es la capacidad de escuchar el habla conversacional cuando se realiza la prueba con cada oído a una distancia de 2 metros y con la espalda hacia el médico forense (PART-MED.B.080 Otorrinolaringología Subparte (b) y (c)). Esta prueba se realiza en cada examen médico para pilotos profesionales y privados.
Para pilotos profesionales y pilotos privados con una calificación de instrumento, se requiere una prueba adicional llamada audiograma. El audiograma es una prueba en la que significa que ha escuchado sonidos en diferentes frecuencias. La audición perfecta se mide como una pérdida nula de audición (0 decibelios – 0 dB) en esa frecuencia en particular.   b. Renovación significa que debe realizar una re examinación si ha dejado que caduque su certificado. La nueva fecha de vencimiento se calcula agregando el número relevante de meses del nuevo período de validez a la fecha del examen. Para un examen realizado muy temprano (más de 45 días antes de que caduque el certificado actual) se aplican las reglas de renovación.

Certificado medico de segunda clase.

Se requiere un certificado médico de segunda clase solo para los pilotos de aviación general, aquellos que vuelan como pasatiempo. Dado que el titular no está involucrado en actividades comerciales, el certificado no es tan restrictivo; aún así, el titular del certificado médico debe estar mental y físicamente en forma para ejercer de manera segura los privilegios de la licencia correspondiente.
Si no es titular de un certificado médico de segunda clase, nos complacerá ayudarlo a organizar su examen en un Centro Aeromédico autorizado.
Es a discreción de los examinadores si la prueba psicológica se realizará para un certificado médico de segunda clase. Aún así se requiere solo si existe una sospecha seria de alcoholismo, intento de suicidio, depresión u otros factores similares.

1st STEP: Earn your Private Pilot license

The first step in your aviation career will be to earn your Private Pilot license (PPL). During this initial flight training you will learn all the fundamentals of aviation and acquire the essential skills to fly an aircraft. With your Private Pilot License, you will be able to fly a Single Engine Piston Land (SEP Land) for your own pleasure. You will also be able to carry passengers anywhere in Europe. This flight training can be completed in less than 3 months depending on your personal investment and availability.

2nd STEP: Earn your Air Transport Pilot license Theory

Once you’ve earned your Private Pilot License, it’s time to expand your knowledge by studying the 14 theoretical subjects of the Air Transport Pilot license (ATPL). The European Air Safety Agency (EASA) requires you to have superior and precise knowledge of aviation to be able to become a Airline Pilot. Once these 14 subjects are successfully validated you can move on to the next step, which will be your professional flight training.

3rd STEP: Build your private experience by Time Building and Night Rating

Visa assistance for foreign students of Flying Academy in the United States

In order to be granted a visa to participate in flight training at Flying Academy Miami and Los Angeles, all applicants must go through the following steps. The procedure is divided into two parts: Obtaining the I-20 form and obtaining the M-1 visa.

How can I get US Visa?

If you need a visa to enter the United States, please let us know. The requirements to obtain an I-20 form (used to apply for the M-1 Visa) are as follows:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Document at least 12 years of academic education by providing an official copy of a high school diploma or equivalent, translated into English
• Document financial ability to fund tuition expenses and personal support for the duration of the program. This documentation MUST be in the form of a official letter from your bank showing the amount of funds available, in US Dollars, sufficient to finance all training, housing, personal expenses, etc., while in the United States
• Demonstrate the ability to read, write, and understand English language

In addition, the US BCIS requires:

• Full-time participation of at least 22 training hours per week. Flying Academy USA (Silver Express) requires that a minimum of 10 hours of this be Flight instruction.
• Demonstration of financial ability on a continuous basis.

Each applicant is required to provide full and complete information on the application for admission, and must submit all documentation with a non-refundable application fee prior to receiving the I-20 Form. The decision to issue an M-1 Visa is a collaborative effort by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. BCIS, and the US Department of State. Training is conducted under Parts 61 and 141 of the FAA Regulations.

How to apply?

There are 5 steps in the process of enrolling in the flight training program at Flying Academy USA (Silver Express):

1. Complete the online application. We will send you a confirmation of your acceptance once we have processed your application.
2. Once you receive a confirmation that you were accepted, we will create your user account in our online system and you should pay the First Installment for the Flight Training by bank transfer, out of which $650.00 will be deducted as an enrollment fee. After covering the required payment, we will process your documents and send you your I-20 by express service.
3. Pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee. You are required to pay the SEVIS fee to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) prior to applying for the M-1 visa. The fee for M-1 students is $350 (This is not a school fee or your visa application fee).

5.  Make an appointment with the US Consulate in your country to complete the visa application process. When you call, provide the number from the SEVIS payment receipt. You don’t have to pay it again. The consulate will provide a list of the documents necessary to process your application. Have these documents ready when you arrive for your appointment. You may find a local travel agent helpful in preparing your documents. A full description of the VISA process is available on the US State Department web site.
6. Complete the online TSA application, choosing Silver Express as your flight training provider. This requires payment of $130.00 online by credit card for processing your security clearance.
7. Once you have the appointment with the US Consulate, notify us and we will schedule your flight course.

TSA procedures assistance for foreign students

In addition to our normal paperwork, all new non ­U.S. Citizen students must complete the following:

Before Arrival (the TSA Approval Application MUST be started 3­-4 weeks in advance)

1. Log on to the TSA website: https://www.flightschoolcandidates.gov/
2. Create a New Candidate Account – a passport and valid email is necessary.
3. After the account has been created, the student must fill out the application – all eight steps.
4. Please select Flying Academy as the flight training organization – remember to save all steps and follow instructions.
5. Scan passport into computer database.
6. Return to homepage, scroll all the way down and click submit application.
7. Once the application has been submitted, let the Flying Academy office know to be able to validate the student – via [email protected]
8. Once the student has been validated, he or she must log in again and scroll down to the bottom of the page. (A money symbol should appear)
9. The student must click on the money symbol to pay the $130 processing fee – Payment must be via credit card.
10. Once the student has paid the fee, they should receive an email from TSA.

After Arrival

1. Upon arrival, the student must be photographed by the front desk.
2. To begin flight training each student must be fingerprinted.
   Fingerprint forms are available upon request.
   Both forms must be filled out in black ink.
   The student will be taken to the police department by a school official.
   The cost for fingerprints is $30.00 exact change. (The police department does not provide change)
3. The completed fingerprint forms must be mailed to TSA if the student has received an email from TSA stating that the documentation has been accepted – if this email has been received, proceed with mailing.
4. In approximately a week, the student should receive final TSA approval. Please keep checking your email.
5. If everything has been completed, the student may begin flight training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I qualify for a Visa?

The Immigration and National Act has specific requirements which must be met by applicants for the student visa. Consulates will determine whether you qualify for the visa. Applicants must demonstrate that they properly meet student visa requirements including:

• Live in a residence abroad, with no immediate intention of abandoning that residence
• Intend to depart from the United States upon completion of the course of study
• Possess sufficient funds to pursue the proposed course of study

When should I apply?

• Embassies/Consulates can issue your M1 student visa as early as 120 days before the start date on your I-20 form. Students are encouraged to apply for their I-20 early to provide enough time for visa processing. It is recommended that you wait until you receive your Form I-20 before you make an interview appointment at the U.S. embassy or U.S. consulate. Students can enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before the study start date shown on your I-20 form

What is the I-20 form?

• The I-20 form shows that you are eligible for M-1 Student status. The I-20 form is issued by the school (Silver Express). The M1 visa is issued by the US Consulate/Embassy.

What about my spouse and/or dependents?

• It is possible for qualifying spouses & dependents to join M1 students in the US as M2 visa holders. Please contact our school official for information.

Do I need health insurance?

• Yes. Students are responsible for obtaining health insurance. We have an option for health insurance here at Flying Academy. Please contact us for further information.

Is it possible to take vacation as an M1 Student?

4. Como pagar la tarifa del SEVIS: La Información en SEVIS y las tarifas se pueden encontrar en www.ice.gov/sevis

Alojamiento en los Estados Unidos

 Después de su llegada

¿Yo califico para una visa?

We can arrange a pick-up for you from the Vaclav Havel International Airport in Prague or any bus or train station. We will make sure to get you safely to the training base in Prague, or Brno.
If you arrive to the Vaclav Havel International Airport in Prague, and your desired destination is the Brno training base, our driver will help you to get the right bus or training connection from Prague to Brno, and the ticket (approx. 10 EUR). At the station in Brno another driver will be waiting for you, ready to take you to the base, or to the accommodation facility.
This service is free of charge for those coming for the first time.

You can choose between dorm-type accommodation or hotel-like single or shared rooms. The accommodation which we can arrange is in close proximity of the training base, approx. 10-20 minutes by public transportation.

Getting to the Vaclav Havel International Airport from Flying Academy Prague by public transportation:

1. from the Letňany metro station, go to Prague Main Railway metro station (Hlavní Nádraží). The Bus to the Airport is #AE and leaves from the bus stop upstairs the Railway Station. To buy the ticket, use at ticket box at the Main Railway Station (40 CZK) or buy it directly from the bus driver (60 CZK). It takes 30 minutes to get to the airport.

2. from the Letňany metro station, go to the “Museum” metro station, and then change to the green line metro A. Take the Metro A from the Museum station to the station Nádraží Veleslavín (in the direction of Nemocnice Motol). The Bus to the Airport is #119, leaves from the bus stop upstairs the metro.

To buy the ticket, use the ticket machine at the metro station (24 CZK) or buy it directly from the bus driver (40 CZK). You should purchase a ticket that’s valid for a minimum of 30 minutes. If you have a Czech phone number, you can send a text message with the text ‘’DPT 24’’ to the number 90206 and you will get the ticket by a text message.
